DAY SIX

Affirmation: I need only take the next step.

“You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”

— Martin Luther King, Jr.

Perseverance implies staying a difficult course, trudging through a war zone of hardship and scarcity. This is not what is required here. Perseverance is simply taking the next step — putting one foot in front of the other. Taking the next step and the next, knowing that you are taking each step with God. That is all that is required — not tomorrow’s steps or the next day’s, or those to be taken twenty years from now. Don’t worry about how you will remain alcohol free for the rest of your life. How will you manage stress? What about your friends? How will you celebrate?

None of this matters because the future is impossible to traverse. The only moment that exists is the one that you are in right now. What will you do right now? You will take the next step. It’s easy — just the next step. You are walking in the right direction, on the path intended for you by God himself.

Although a step may seem insignificant to you, know that it is a quantum leap in your growth and spirituality. Your step is a million miles long because when you are walking with God on the path home, one step is an immeasurable distance. When you walk in his direction, when you align your will with God’s will, you travel at infinite speed and you are infinity blessed. All creation works with you to ensure your success. All things work together to bring you closer to God. Travel well today, and know that recovery will lead you home.
